OK, so this has news is pretty sweet.
Patriot Memory (these guys -> http://www.patriotmemory.com/) have released the first ever, at least to my knowledge
single DIMM of memory that comes with 8GB of memory on it.
8GB!! as awesome as this is, it also kinda stings me a little. cause just one of these things has 50% more memory in it than
the 3 sticks that are currently sitting in my gaming rig at home, ouch!
now obviously these things aren't cheap but what am really curious about is this. they are marketing the memory as a solution for PC gamers. but am not sure i see this actually helping improve performance. I am a gamer and with my 6GB of memory i really see my system uses anywhere near 100% of my memory...ever! and for most people this is probably the case. with that in mind then rather than have a single stick of memory which is huge wouldn't you get more performance with the same amount or maybe even less memory running on 2 or 3 channels (and when x79 comes out 4 channels)?
ok so no one said you could only buy one of these beastly DIMMs, right?
but it makes no sense! why? cost!
one DIMM costs over $200!!! thats more than what i paid for for my pack 3 2GB DIMMs
and a dual channel pack costs over $400!
so to fill up all three channels on my x58 motherboard i need to pay (according to the prices i've seen) i'd need to pay almost $700
which is more than a top of the range graphics card! (bar the crazy dual GPU cards of course)
the timing for this 8GB DIMM is 9-9-9-24 which is the same as my current memory but the clock is lower at 1333 MHz.
so considering i'm always below 6GB in terms of memory usage i would get better performance out of my faster 6GB set of DIMMs
you could get memory for a lot less, that's tighter on timings and faster clocks, with sufficient (very important). as a gamer i don't see the point for most gamers to buy this as it is now with that price tag.
this is a great idea and am all for it. in future the potential for the amount of memory one could have on their system may become very useful but i think they may have the wrong idea marketing it as memory for gamers. cause most games won't need it (seeing as memory on graphics cards is also growing in size). not to mention the price. am pretty sure most gamers would prefer to get something else for the money...or maybe thats just me.
